Re:                  Early Lacrosse Registrations

                        Proposed W.M.L.A.  ‘A’ League

It’s time to start thinking about Lacrosse!  Early registrations for all age groups for the 2005 minor lacrosse season will be taking place in various malls and arenas throughout the city.  Avoid the March “rush” and register early.  Please refer to the registration dates, times and locations listed later in this letter.  Athletes can register at any location.

As well, the MLA and WMLA have received repeated requests from parents, players, coaches and officials to provide an opportunity to develop skill and knowledge enhancing the ability of Manitoban athletes, coaches and officials to compete successfully outside the Province.  During the fall the groups met to devise a plan to provide an avenue to fulfill these wishes in the form of an ‘A’ League for Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget players.

The aim of this league is to assist the WMLA with tiering challenges and support the MLA to strengthen the Provincial Team Development Model to ensure that athletes/coaches of the WMLA receive every opportunity to be selected to these teams.  Potential coaches will be identified by the MLA and WMLA and invited to apply to coach in this league and be an integral part of the Provincial coaching staff, providing opportunities for a mentorship program. Information regarding this program will be mailed to coaches and be posted on the new MLA website.  It would also provide a training ground and selection process for the development of officials who will be identified by the Box Referee-in Chief.

This ‘A’ League will provide the MLA’s provincial team coaches with a ready-made talent identification and assessment tool, including a pool of coaches who know the players on their zone team and including those who may not have played in the ‘A’ Division, but might be candidates for the provincial team.

Each zone will have the opportunity to select 1 or 2 teams per age group, depending on the number of eligible athletes.  Players who wish to be considered for the ‘A’ League/Provincial Program will be given the opportunity to attend early registration dates.  There will be a registration fee of $40 to cover the cost of administration and facilities and will include on-floor skills sessions and team tryouts/evaluations for zone teams.
